Colombia moves to restore tax‑free “Día sin IVA” with up to three annual sales days

The Centre‑Right party Centro Democrático has filed a bill in the Colombian Congress to revive the “Día sin IVA”, a tax‑free shopping day that would be authorized up to three times a year. The proposal seeks to stimulate consumer spending and support domestic producers by exempting value‑added tax on a defined list of goods, including clothing, appliances, computers, communications equipment, school supplies, toys, sports items and agricultural inputs.

The draft law gives priority to products made or assembled in Colombia or containing at least 50 % national content, and it requires electronic invoicing for the exemption to apply. If passed, the measure would become a permanent tool for the government to boost sales during periods of economic slowdown and to encourage formal commerce.

The initiative revives a similar effort that was approved by Congress in 2024 but stalled due to procedural issues. It now awaits debate and voting in the legislative chambers.
