Colombia National Museum faces controversy over removal of art pieces

The removal of approximately 30 pieces from the National Museum of Colombia has sparked widespread indignation among academics and the arts community. The controversy centers on the empty walls of the “Hacer sociedad” room, a space dedicated to the history of Colombia's social and political organization.

Among the withdrawn items are works representing significant historical movements, including a 1973 etching by Miguel Ángel Rojas, a 1978 photocopy of a manifesto for contraception and abortion by the Encuentro Nacional de Mujeres, and the first issue of the independent magazine Ventana Gay from 1980.

Critics argue that the intervention by political power in curatorial selection raises fundamental questions regarding censorship, authoritarianism, and the role of museums in reflecting social contradictions, sexual diversity, and political violence. The debate highlights the tension between professional curatorial responsibility and political influence over cultural institutions.
