Colombia President orders removal of museum exhibits

Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has ordered the removal of at least 30 pieces from the permanent exhibition of the National Museum in Bogotá. The administration describes the move as part of a cultural “counterrevolution” intended to prevent institutions from being influenced by what the president calls “atheist social communism.”

The removed items include exhibits related to feminist and LGBTQ+ activism, the 1991 Constitution, political violence, and the 2016 Peace Agreement. Specific objects mentioned include campaign posters from assassinated presidential candidates and the “balígrafo” used during the signing of the peace accord.

The decision has sparked widespread protests by students, artists, and civil rights groups, who accuse the government of censorship and attempting to erase diverse historical narratives. In response to the controversy, a judge in Bogotá has issued precautionary measures to protect the works, prohibiting their destruction, unauthorized transfer, or removal from the museum's inventory while the legal case proceeds.
