Colombia observes National Spasticity Day to raise awareness
Colombia is observing National Spasticity Day on October 9 to raise awareness about motor alterations caused by brain or spinal cord injuries. Spasticity involves excessive muscle tension and rigidity, which can lead to pain and difficulty in movement.
According to the Epitome international study, 45.7% of evaluated participants showed confirmed spasticity three months after their first stroke. The condition can affect individuals following a stroke, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, or multiple sclerosis.
To mark the occasion, the Colombian Association of Neurology (ACN) and Ipsen are hosting free activities for patients and caregivers. These include a formative event titled ‘El árbol de las posibilidades’ at the Fundem Foundation in Bogotá on October 8, and an Instagram Live session led by neurologist Andrés Betancourt to provide information and resources for managing the condition.
