Colombia opens embassy in Jerusalem, reversing previous policy

Colombia officially inaugurated its embassy in Jerusalem on October 14, 2026, marking a significant diplomatic shift under President Abelardo de la Espriella. The move, led by Foreign Minister Omar Bula Escobar and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, relocates the Colombian mission from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, making Colombia the tenth country to establish a diplomatic presence in the city.

The decision reverses the foreign policy of former President Gustavo Petro, who severed ties with Israel in 2024 in protest of military actions in Gaza. Along with the embassy opening, the current administration has restored a free trade agreement between the two nations.

The move has drawn sharp condemnation from the Palestinian government, the Arab League, and several Muslim-majority nations, including Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. These entities argue that the relocation violates international law and UN Security Council resolutions regarding the status of Jerusalem. Palestinian officials and international bodies maintain that East Jerusalem should serve as the capital of a future independent Palestinian state.
