Colombia police seize record number of shark fins in Tumaco raid

Colombian authorities have uncovered one of the largest smuggling finds in the country's history during a raid in the Pacific port city of Tumaco. National Police and the Attorney General's Office discovered more than 4,200 shark fins packed in sacks at a business in the El Bajito neighborhood.

The seized goods were prepared for export to illegal markets in Asia. Officials estimate the commercial value of the fins to be several hundred thousand US dollars. The operation was conducted in coordination with the Colombian Army and the Carabineros and Environmental Protection Directorate.

One individual was arrested at the scene and faces charges for the illegal exploitation of renewable natural resources. Oscar Rico Guzmán, Director of the Carabineros and Environmental Protection agency, described the operation as a decisive blow against the illegal trade of natural resources in the Nariño region.
