Colombia President Abelardo De La Espriella faces major earthquake crisis

Newly inaugurated Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella is facing an immediate crisis following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake. The tremor's epicenter was located in the Chocó region, a rural area on the Pacific Coast, and caused severe damage in the neighboring Valle del Cauca coffee-growing region.

De La Espriella, a former criminal defense lawyer with no prior political experience, assumed office for the 2026-2030 term following a ceremony in Cali. The inauguration was attended by international figures including King Felipe VI of Spain and Argentine President Javier Milei. To secure the city during the transition, approximately 11,000 security personnel were deployed, and local authorities implemented restrictions such as a dry law and vehicle limitations.

In response to the earthquake, the President canceled his scheduled travel plans to lead the disaster response efforts personally from Bogotá. The disaster strikes a nation already grappling with resurgent armed groups and economic challenges.
