Colombia President Abelardo de la Espriella loosens firearm restrictions

Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has issued a decree loosening long-standing restrictions on carrying firearms in public for self-defense. The move reverses a policy established in December 2015 under former President Juan Manuel Santos, which required additional authorization even for those holding gun permits.

President de la Espriella stated that the change is intended to ensure law-abiding citizens can defend themselves against criminals. He emphasized that while citizens gain more rights to carry weapons, law enforcement will continue to aggressively pursue and disarm criminal elements.

Former Senator María Fernanda Cabal of the Centro Democrático party praised the decision, describing it as a matter of common sense and a fundamental right to protect one's family. Cabal also highlighted the issue of illegal weaponry in the country, noting that over four million illegal guns exist in Colombia, many of which enter via the border with Venezuela.
