Colombia President appoints Viviane Morales as Peace Commissioner

Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella has appointed Viviane Morales as the new Peace Commissioner. Morales, a former Attorney General and Minister of Education, will also temporarily lead the Peace Agreement Implementation Unit.

Her primary mandate is to conduct an exhaustive review of the 2016 Peace Agreement implementation and dismantle what the administration describes as ‘false peace.’ The President stated the move aims to eliminate unnecessary bureaucratic structures and prevent the use of peace discourse as a tool for impunity or political privilege.

Morales is tasked with evaluating the fulfillment of commitments, verifying the allocation of public resources, and identifying institutional failures regarding justice, victim reparation, and national security. This appointment signals a significant shift in the government's approach to peace policy, moving toward a focus on security and institutional oversight.
