Colombia President Gustavo Petro attacks transition talks, warns of egg tax

President Gustavo Petro used his X account to respond to remarks by José Manuel Restrepo, the incoming vice‑president‑elect and transition coordinator, who said the hand‑over meetings should not become a media spectacle. Petro insisted that citizens have the right to see the transition proceedings, stating “No necesitamos hacer shows para decir la verdad” and emphasizing that the process must be transparent for the people who voted for both the outgoing and incoming administrations.

Petro also warned that the new government could impose value‑added tax on eggs, echoing concerns from the Federación Nacional de Avicultores. He wrote, “Ya le van a poner IVA a los huevos,” and criticised previous attempts to reform taxes that he says would burden ordinary Colombians. The remarks link the upcoming fiscal policy to everyday food prices and highlight political tension over the transition and future tax measures.
