Colombia: President de la Espriella ends peace talks with armed groups
Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has officially dismantled the 'Total Peace' policy inherited from the previous administration. Through several resolutions, the government has terminated all ongoing dialogue processes, socio-legal spaces, and territorial mechanisms with various armed groups and criminal organizations, including the ELN, the Clan del Golfo (EGC), and FARC dissidents.
The administration cited fiscal inefficiency as a primary reason, noting that over 7,000 million Colombian pesos were spent on fees for negotiators and spokespersons during the previous term without achieving concrete disarmament. De la Espriella emphasized that criminal groups will no longer receive political status or legal concessions, stating that those wishing to leave armed conflict must instead submit to the justice system.
In addition to ending peace talks, the government has ordered the closure of the Temporary Location Zone (ZUT) in Valle del Guamuez and has demanded the surrender of specific commanders, such as Fredy Castillo Carrillo of the Autodefensas Conquistadoras de la Sierra Nevada, within one week. Furthermore, the administration has lifted the general suspension on firearm carry permits, allowing citizens with existing authorizations to carry weapons for personal defense, a move aimed at countering the influence of illegal armed groups.
