Colombia President Petro asks Trump to stay out of election

President Gustavo Petro of Colombia urged U.S. President Donald Trump not to intervene in the country’s presidential runoff scheduled for 21 June. Petro posted on social media that foreign support or funding is barred by Colombia’s constitution and that any attempt to sway the electorate would be illegal.

He referenced Trump’s earlier praise for right‑wing candidate Abelardo de la Espriella, who led the first‑round vote, and warned that regardless of which candidate wins, the bilateral friendship built over two decades must be respected. Petro emphasized that the Colombian people’s free will should determine the outcome, noting concerns about drug‑related vote‑buying and corruption.
