Colombia: Protests planned against Abelardo de la Espriella administration

Social organizations, labor unions, and indigenous groups in Colombia have called for a national day of mobilization next Wednesday. This marks the first major protest facing the administration of Abelardo de la Espriella, who has been in power for two months.

The Colombian Federation of Educators (Fecode) is mobilizing teachers to defend public education, teacher healthcare, and labor rights. They are also demanding the reconstruction of schools damaged by the earthquake on August 10. In Bogotá, the District Association of Educators (ADE) has announced a 24-hour strike, citing unfulfilled collective agreements and salary deductions.

In the southwest, four indigenous organizations are holding a summit in the Cauca department to coordinate their response. Their grievances include government policies regarding extractivism and large-scale projects on ancestral lands, as well as concerns over a proposed Anti-Terrorist Statute and new public force protocols.
