Colombia reports 112 social leaders murdered and 86 massacres in 2026
The Colombian Ombudsman's Office (Defensoría del Pueblo) has reported a significant surge in violence against social leaders, human rights defenders, and peace agreement signatories between January and August 2026. During this eight-month period, 112 social leaders were murdered, including 91 men and 21 women. The report also confirmed the deaths of 10 former FARC combatants who were part of the 2016 peace process.
Additionally, the entity documented 86 massacres across 23 departments, resulting in 326 fatalities. The violence is heavily concentrated in specific regions, with the department of Cauca recording the highest number of leader murders (26 cases) and massacres (13 cases). Other highly affected areas include Valle del Cauca and Antioquia.
Since the signing of the 2016 peace agreement, the Defensoría has recorded a total of 1,777 murders of social leaders and human rights defenders.
