Colombia faces humanitarian crisis from armed conflict and regional violence
Colombia continues to face severe humanitarian challenges stemming from long-term armed conflict and recent localized emergencies. The Unidad de Búsqueda de Personas dadas por Desaparecidas (UBPD) reports that at least 137,000 people have disappeared due to the conflict since 1921, with nearly half of these cases occurring during the 2000s. Since the 2016 peace agreement, the ICRC has documented 2,659 conflict-related disappearances, including 99 new cases between January and July 2026, 36 of which involve children and adolescents.
In the Chocó department, a dual crisis has emerged as communities struggle with the aftermath of a 7.4 magnitude earthquake and escalating violence between armed groups like the Clan del Golfo and the ELN. This violence has led to forced displacements, confinement of thousands of people, and attacks involving explosive drones.
Nationwide, the Defensoría del Pueblo reports that 90 social leaders were murdered and 77 massacres occurred between January and July 2026, resulting in 300 deaths. Additionally, 97 cases of forced recruitment of minors were identified during the same period, primarily affecting Cauca, Norte de Santander, and Nariño.
