World Stroke Day: Health experts warn of rising cases in young adults

On World Stroke Day, observed annually on October 29, medical professionals and health organizations are raising alarms regarding the global impact of cerebrovascular accidents (CVA), also known as strokes. Globally, more than 12 million people suffer a stroke each year, representing a new case every 40 seconds. It is currently the second leading cause of death and the primary cause of permanent disability worldwide.

Experts emphasize that up to 80% of strokes are preventable through lifestyle modifications, including managing hypertension, diabetes, and cholesterol, as well as reducing smoking and sedentary behavior. A concerning trend is the increasing incidence among younger populations. In several regions, including Colombia and Chile, there is a notable rise in cases among adults aged 35 to 50, often attributed to metabolic risk factors and obesity.

Medical professionals recommend using the FAST rule to identify symptoms: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, and Time to call emergency services. Rapid intervention is critical, as brain cells can die at a rate of millions per minute during an event. Specialized treatments such as intravenous thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy are available to restore blood flow if administered within the appropriate therapeutic window.
