Colombia manages earthquake recovery and energy policy shifts

Colombia is undergoing various economic and social developments across several sectors. Following a major 7.4 magnitude earthquake on August 10, centered in San José del Palmar, recovery efforts are underway. Unesco has approved $60,000 in emergency funds to restore cultural heritage sites damaged by the quake, which resulted in 335 deaths and significant structural damage to buildings across seven departments. Additionally, Coca-Cola has pledged $3 million to support small businesses, schools, and water access in the affected regions of Valle, Chocó, and the Eje Cafetero.

In the energy and economic sectors, the National Hydrocarbons Agency (ANH) is seeking to reactivate oil and gas production in Santander through fracking, signaling a potential shift in national energy policy. Meanwhile, the Colombian stock market (COLCAP) saw a significant rally, with the index rising 2.69% as the peso strengthened against the US dollar. This market movement was influenced by central bank interest rate decisions and fiscal news.

Other regional developments include Satena preparing new commercial flight routes to improve connectivity in Vichada and Guainía, and Cundinamarca implementing a technical program that reduced sugarcane pests from 15% to 8%, boosting local producer incomes.
