Colombia reports rising breast cancer rates in women under 45

In Colombia, 54% of breast cancer cases were detected in early stages during 2024, according to the Cuenta de Alto Costo. However, there has been a rising trend in cases among women under 45, increasing from 4.75 to 5.90 per 100,000 inhabitants between 2020 and 2024.

Medical experts from Lilly Colombia emphasize several key warning signs and facts for prevention. Notably, approximately 80% of breast cancers occur in women without specific risk factors other than age and sex. Additionally, the disease also affects men, with 1,161 prevalent cases and 65 new cases reported in Colombia in 2024.

Warning signs beyond a palpable mass include skin changes in the breast, nipple discharge, dimpling, or redness. Early detection remains critical for successful treatment and improved prognosis.
