Colombia: Representative Carrascal defends JEP and peace process
Colombian Representative María Fernanda Carrascal of the Pacto Histórico has defended her public association with Sandra Ramírez, a leader of the Comunes party and widow of former FARC commander Manuel Marulanda Vélez. During a session in the Chamber of Representatives, Carrascal addressed criticisms regarding a photograph taken with Ramírez, asserting that she stands by the principles of political reintegration and the Peace Agreement.
Carrascal also voiced strong support for the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), stating that the tribunal is essential for accessing truth and justice. She emphasized that the JEP has investigated crimes involving various actors, including FARC members and state agents, and has worked to identify victims and reconstruct patterns of violence.
Separately, a heated exchange occurred between Representatives Carrascal and Catherine Juvinao on social media. The dispute followed a motion of censure against Defense Minister Jorge Mora regarding military bombings that resulted in the deaths of minors. Carrascal accused Juvinao of being unable to criticize the current government effectively, while Juvinao criticized Carrascal’s conduct and linked current security issues to the ‘La Paz Total’ policy.
