Colombia restores airport operations following 7.4 magnitude earthquake
Following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Colombia, authorities are managing the gradual restoration of air connectivity. The Civil Aviation Authority (Aerocivil) and the Ministry of Transport confirmed that airports in Cali, Quibdó, and Armenia have resumed operations. However, commercial flights remain restricted at the airports in Pereira, Buenaventura, Cartago, and Manizales due to structural damage to terminals and control towers. These restricted sites are currently limited to humanitarian, medical, and state-related flights.
In response to the emergency, airlines like LATAM have implemented fare caps for flights to Cali, Armenia, and Pereira to prevent price gouging amid high demand. LATAM reported that 49 flights were cancelled, affecting approximately 7,657 passengers. Additionally, the telecommunications company MasOrange has waived costs for international calls and SMS from Spain to Colombia for a period of 15 days to facilitate communication.
On the economic front, the Colombian Federation of Insurers (Fasecolda) has activated emergency protocols. The organization noted that over 2.2 million properties in the country are insured against earthquakes, with 442,514 located in the high-impact zones across seven departments.
