Colombia restores coal exports to Israel

The Colombian government, under President Abelardo de la Espriella, has authorized the resumption of coal exports to Israel, reversing a ban imposed by former President Gustavo Petro in 2024. The previous administration had suspended these exports as a protest against military actions in Gaza.

Minister of Commerce Mauricio Gómez Amín described the prior restriction as an ‘ideological’ measure that harmed the national economy. The National Federation of Coal Producers (Fenalcarbón) noted that the suspension resulted in an annual loss of approximately 3.5 million tons of coal, valued at roughly $200 million. However, industry leaders warned that regaining previous market shares may be difficult as Israel has increased its use of natural gas and sourced coal from South Africa.

This trade decision coincides with a broader diplomatic shift between the two nations. Recent developments include the appointment of a new Israeli ambassador to Colombia, Vivian Aisen, and Colombia’s recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Former President Petro has criticized the move, stating that restoring relations while the conflict in Gaza continues is akin to ‘applauding a genocide.’
