Norte de Santander: U.S. issues high-level security alert for Colombia

The United States Department of State has issued a high-level security alert for the Norte de Santander department in Colombia, specifically highlighting the Catatumbo region. The advisory warns of an elevated risk of attacks by illegal armed groups, including the National Liberation Army (ELN).

Security officials report that these groups are increasingly using commercial drones modified with explosives, often in coordination with rifle fire, to target police substations, military installations, and government infrastructure. The attacks are noted to occur with little to no warning.

As a result, the U.S. government has issued a Level 4 'Do Not Travel' advisory for Norte de Santander. Additionally, citizens are advised to avoid all travel within 10 kilometers of the border between Colombia and Venezuela due to risks of terrorism, crime, and kidnapping.
