Colombia seeks legislation to restrict hormonal treatments for minors

President Abelardo De La Espriella has called on the Congress of the Republic to legislate limits and prohibitions regarding hormonal treatments for minors. The President stated that current interpretations of progressive autonomy and free development of personality have created legal gaps that must be addressed through legislation to protect children's rights.

Simultaneously, two legislative initiatives have been introduced in Congress. One proposal, promoted by Representative David Cote, seeks to mandate that sexual education in schools be strictly biological and scientific, focusing on the existence of two natural sexes and excluding gender ideology from curricula.

A second multi-party initiative, titled ‘Ley Laura: Niños, no experimento’, seeks to explicitly prohibit puberty blockers, hormonal treatments for gender affirmation, and gender-modifying surgeries for children and adolescents. The bill proposes that medical professionals performing these procedures would be subject to serious medical ethics violations.
