Colombia seeks US tariff suspension following devastating earthquake
Following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake on August 10, Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella is managing both humanitarian recovery and diplomatic negotiations. De la Espriella held a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to request a temporary suspension of the 12.5% tariff currently imposed on Colombian imports. The US government has expressed willingness to proceed with this process, and Commerce Minister Mauricio Gómez is traveling to Washington to handle technical requirements.
The earthquake has caused massive destruction, with reconstruction costs estimated between $12 trillion and $30 trillion pesos. Significant private donations have been announced, including $200 billion pesos from Luis Carlos Sarmiento Angulo and $150 billion pesos from Jaime Gilinski. The US has already coordinated $26.5 million in emergency humanitarian assistance and search and rescue support.
In domestic politics, the President delivered a 135-page document, the 'Libro Blanco', to the Attorney General. The report details 82 alleged cases of corruption occurring during the previous administration of Gustavo Petro. Additionally, the Colombian Congress is advancing a proposal for a National Seismic Alert System to provide early warnings via mobile phones, television, and radio to mitigate future disaster impacts.
