Colombia experiences intense seismic activity in Tolima and other regions

Colombia is experiencing intense seismic activity, characterized by a significant swarm of tremors primarily concentrated in the Tolima department. In the municipality of Chaparral, authorities have monitored a continuous sequence of movements, including a series of four earthquakes on the morning of September 25 with magnitudes ranging from 3.1 to 4.0. This follows a period of high activity where magnitudes reached up to 4.5.

The seismic swarm has prompted preventive evacuations in public buildings, hospitals, and municipal offices in cities such as Armenia, Ibagué, and Cali. Experts are investigating whether this activity is linked to the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that occurred in San José del Palmar, Chocó, on August 10, or if it stems from local geological fault activations.

Other regions have also reported tremors. A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck Tuluá in Valle del Cauca, causing panic among residents, while a magnitude 4.6 event was recorded in Sipí, Chocó, felt in Cali and Palmira. The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management has deployed special commissions to evaluate structural damage in vulnerable areas.
