Colombia Senate approves project to end JEP functions by 2028

The First Commission of the Colombian Senate has approved the first debate of a legislative act project aimed at setting a non-extendable end date for the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) in March 2028. The initiative, promoted by Senator Enrique Gómez, seeks to modify the transitional article of the Constitution to prevent any further extensions beyond the original agreement, which would have allowed for an additional five years.

The proposal intends to establish a closing regime that transfers the competencies of the transitional justice system to the ordinary justice system. Senator Gómez argued that the Constitutional Court did not limit the legislative power to modulate the duration of the organism. He also cited rising administrative costs, noting that JEP contracts increased from 134 to 1,218 in less than seven years, with accumulated costs exceeding 62,000 million pesos.

During the debate, Senator Jota Pe Hernández highlighted that the entity has issued 21 sentences at a cost of 4 trillion pesos. Other senators, including Santiago Barreto and Alfredo Deluque, criticized the entity for high costs and slow proceedings. The vote passed with 10 affirmative votes, following the withdrawal of members from the Pacto Histórico opposition party, who were unable to break the quorum.
