Colombia Senator proposes National Bible Day for October 31
Senator Sara Castellanos has introduced a bill in the Colombian Congress to establish October 31 as the National Bible Day. The proposal seeks to recognize the religious and cultural influence of the Bible within the country. If passed, the law would serve a symbolic and political purpose rather than creating a public holiday or mandating celebration.
The initiative has sparked debate regarding the secular nature of the Colombian state. While supporters, including Vice President José Manuel Restrepo and members of the administration, argue that the Bible is a fundamental cultural and spiritual pillar, opponents such as the Association of Atheists of Bogotá have indicated they may pursue legal action to challenge the measure.
The proposed date coincides with Halloween, adding a layer of complexity to the debate. During the filing of the bill, Castellanos distributed Bibles to members of the Senate and the House of Representatives.
