Colombia suspends President Gustavo Petro pending election investigation

The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has been provisionally suspended by Gloria Arizabaleta, head of the Commission of Investigation and Accusations of the House of Representatives. The order, issued on 10 May 2026, bars Petro from exercising his duties and his remuneration until 21 June 2026, the closing time of the presidential runoff. The suspension is tied to allegations that Petro intervened in the electoral process, a violation classified as a “grave fault” under Colombian law.

Legal experts and cabinet members note that the commission can only recommend the measure; the Senate holds the constitutional authority to remove a sitting president. Consequently, the suspension lacks direct legal effect unless the Senate ratifies it, and many anticipate the Senate will not act before the runoff. The decision adds political tension to the imminent second‑round contest between Iván Cepeda of the Historic Pact and right‑wing candidate Abelardo de la Espriella, who led the first round.
