Colombia to implement new driving license exam requirements
Starting September 14, 2026, Colombia will implement new requirements for obtaining or recategorizing a driving license. According to the Ministry of Transport, applicants must pass a mandatory theoretical exam covering road knowledge and behavior.
The new regulation applies specifically to individuals applying for a license for the first time and those seeking to change their license category to drive different types of vehicles. Drivers who are only renewing an existing license are exempt from this theoretical examination.
The exam will consist of 40 multiple-choice questions: 12 focusing on attitudes and 28 covering core driver training topics. Evaluation will be conducted by authorized Logistics Support Evaluation Centers (CALE). Transit authorities will use the National Unified Transit Registry (RUNT) to verify that applicants have passed the exam before issuing any licenses.
