Colombia to receive three US MQ-9A Reaper drones for security operations

Colombia will receive three MQ-9A Reaper drones from the United States to bolster its fight against drug trafficking and illegal armed groups. According to Defense Minister Jorge Mora, the aircraft will initially arrive under a loan agreement as part of strengthened bilateral cooperation.

Manufactured by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, these medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicles are designed for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. Their ability to remain airborne for extended periods allows for continuous monitoring of vast territories and real-time tracking of criminal movements in difficult-to-access areas.

The drones are equipped with advanced sensors and cameras to identify clandestine airstrips, illicit crops, and suspicious maritime or land movements. While primarily used for surveillance, the configuration allows for the identification and targeting of high-value strategic objectives under established Colombian engagement rules. The agreement also includes provisions for Colombia to eventually acquire a fourth aircraft using its own resources.
