Colombia tourism surge fuels regional economies and whale‑watching growth

Domestic tourism is becoming a primary engine for Colombia's regional economies, generating employment and supporting businesses such as hotels, restaurants, tour operators, small merchants, artisans, transporters and local guides. Government authorities and the tourism sector are advancing strategies to improve connectivity, upgrade infrastructure and promote new destinations, aiming to position Colombia as a leading regional tourism hub.

In the Pacific region, the annual arrival of humpback whales between July and October has turned whale‑watching into a key ecotourism attraction. In 2025, the towns of Nuquí and Bahía Solano together recorded just over 280 foreign visitor entries, a 35 % rise from 2024. National parks Utría and Gorgona welcomed more than 14,500 visitors, a 5.7 % increase, with 9,317 arrivals during the July‑October season accounting for 63 % of their yearly traffic. Paula Cortés Calle, executive president of ANATO, highlighted that the experience showcases Colombia's natural wealth while creating opportunities for local communities.
