Colombia trade: Exports rise 12.7% while China dominates imports

Colombia's exports grew by 12.7% between January and July 2026, totaling US$32,489 million. This growth was primarily driven by fuels, extractive industries, and a significant increase in non-monetary gold sales.

The United States remains the country's most important export destination, receiving US$9,234 million (28.4% of total exports). Other major markets include the European Union (15.2%), Panama (8.5%), India, and Canada. While the export basket is heavily weighted toward petroleum, coal, and gold, the agricultural sector remains a vital component, with non-mining-energy exports reaching US$26,388.9 million in 2025.

On the import side, China has become a dominant supplier for Colombia. In July 2026, Chinese goods accounted for approximately 30.3% of Colombian imports, with monthly purchases rising 32.6% compared to the previous year. Notable increases in imports from China include passenger vehicles, which saw a 327.7% jump in January 2026, and laptops. While these imports provide access to technology and machinery, they have also increased pressure on domestic manufacturers, prompting the government to consider trade defense instruments.
