Colombia transfers 117 high-profile prisoners following presidential inauguration
Following the inauguration of President Abelardo de la Espriella, the Colombian government and the National Penitentiary and Prison Institute (Inpec) executed a large-scale operation to transfer high-profile inmates. A total of 117 prisoners, many of whom are considered high-risk criminal leaders, were relocated from the La Paz maximum-security prison in Itagüí, Antioquia, to various high-security facilities across the country, including Bogotá, Medellín, Girón, Valledupar, La Dorada, Palmira, Ibagué, and El Barne.
The transferred group includes prominent criminal leaders such as alias 'Douglas', 'Carlos Pesebre', 'El Indio', and 'Tom', many of whom were involved in previous urban peace negotiation processes. The administration stated that the move is intended to strengthen prison control, enhance security, and prevent criminal organizations from coordinating illegal activities from within correctional facilities.
In response to the potential shifts in territorial control caused by the isolation of these leaders, Antioquia Governor Andrés Julián Rendón has declared 'Operación Cazador Antioquia' (OCA). This inter-institutional strategy aims to use military and police intelligence to prevent criminal reorganizations and capture remaining gang members in the Valle de Aburrá and surrounding areas. President De la Espriella also announced plans to construct 'megaprison' facilities to house the most significant threats to national security.
