Gustavo Petro receives Senate approval for one-year travel permit

The Colombian Senate has approved a request by former President Gustavo Petro to travel abroad for a period of one year. The motion passed with 73 votes in favor and 11 against. Petro stated the travel is intended for personal, social, political, and academic commitments, noting he intends to continue his political activities from abroad.

The decision drew significant debate among legislators. While some opposition members questioned the authorization due to ongoing judicial investigations against Petro, the Centro Democrático party clarified its support was conditional. The party stated it did not grant a ‘blank check’ and instead imposed mechanisms requiring Petro to report specific travel dates and destinations to ensure congressional oversight.

Former President Álvaro Uribe also defended the decision, arguing that there is no judicial basis to prevent the travel and noting that previous former presidents have received similar permissions. Critics, however, expressed concerns that the authorization could interfere with legal accountability or facilitate political activity outside the country.
