Colombian and Portuguese Navy training ships dock in US for 250th‑anniversary celebrations

The Colombian Navy’s three‑masted training ship ARC Gloria arrived on the Mississippi River at New Orleans on 29 May 2026, joining the SAIL250 programme that marks the United States’ 250 year anniversary. The ship, commanded by Captain Héctor Nicanor González León, will remain at the Bienville Street Wharf until the following Monday, offering public tours and reinforcing the historic maritime partnership between Colombia and the United States.

Portugal’s training ship NRP Sagres reached New York after a four‑week transatlantic crossing from the Alfeite Naval Base. The vessel will take part in a series of events across U.S. ports honoring the same anniversary, including a reception attended by Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel and a ceremony that opened a bottle of Madeira wine to highlight Portugal’s bid for a non‑permanent seat on the UN Security Council. The ship’s itinerary will continue for two months, concluding in New Bedford, a city with a large Portuguese community.
