Colombian Army destroys illegal mining unit in San Rafael
The Colombian Army, specifically troops from the Special Energy and Road Battalion No. 4, destroyed an illegal mining production unit in the El Ingenio district of San Rafael, Antioquia. The operation targeted an illicit mining site reportedly linked to the ‘Pacificadores de Samaná’ criminal sub-structure.
Authorities seized machinery and equipment valued at approximately 1,040 million Colombian pesos. The confiscated items included an excavator, diesel turbines, motor pumps, suction and classification equipment, tools, hoses, and fuel. Additionally, troops located a satellite internet antenna believed to be used by criminal leaders to communicate and monitor troop movements.
The illegal operation had an estimated production capacity of 3,000 grams of gold per month, with a market value exceeding 1,300 million Colombian pesos. This military action is part of a broader effort to weaken the illicit economies of organized armed groups in the eastern Antioquia region and protect local natural resources.
