Colombian Army dismantles illegal mining in Nariño

The Colombian National Army has dismantled three illegal mining complexes in the Nariño region, specifically targeting the municipalities of Barbacoas and Magüí Payán. The operations, conducted by the Third Division and Hercules Task Force, involved the destruction of machinery and infrastructure used for illicit mineral extraction.

Technical analysis indicates the dismantled sites had a combined monthly production capacity of over 10,400 grams of gold. The estimated monthly value of this gold on the illegal market could exceed 4,659 million pesos. The total logistical damage to the illegal operations, including the destruction of equipment and industrial elements, is valued at more than 1,800 million pesos.

Authorities have linked this mining infrastructure to the Ariel Aldana structure, part of the Coordinadora Nacional Ejército Bolivariano, which reportedly operates under the direction of alias Walter Mendoza. These activities are identified as a primary source of funding for armed groups in the Pacific region of Nariño.
