Colombia: President De la Espriella orders military offensive and cabinet reshuffle

Colombian President Abelardo De la Espriella has announced a ‘total offensive’ against the ELN guerrilla group and FARC dissidents, following a visit to Arauca. During the visit, an ELN truck-bomb alert in the Flor Amarillo sector caused a two-hour delay for the President and his security detail, though explosives were not found.

In a significant cabinet change, De la Espriella removed Rodrigo Lara Restrepo from the Ministry of the Interior after 75 days in office. Alejandro Ordóñez Maldonado, the former ambassador to the OEA, has been named as his successor. Iván Cancino, the Minister of Justice, will serve as temporary acting minister while the transition is finalized. The leadership change occurs amid political tension in Congress and a procedural error that forced the government to approve the 2027 National Budget by decree.

Additionally, security forces confirmed the death of Ricardo Trigos Peñaranda, alias ‘Resorte’, during a military operation in Chinácota, Norte de Santander. Authorities identified Trigos Peñaranda as the financial leader of the ELN’s Reynaldo Ardila Gómez urban war front, responsible for coordinating extortion, kidnapping, and drug trafficking in the Cúcuta region. The operation involved the Army’s Second Division, GAULA Military, and the Metropolitan Police of Cúcuta.
