Colombian authorities launch investigations into prison release and education funding omissions

The Colombian Ministry of Justice and Peace has announced administrative measures against the director of the Carlos Luis Fallas Institutional Care Center in Pococí, Limón, and other officials following the irregular release of an inmate with pending judicial cases. Minister Gabriel Aguilar Vargas has ordered the immediate relocation of the implicated staff while investigations proceed to determine if negligence or breach of duty occurred. The Ministry intends to file a complaint with the Public Ministry to investigate potential criminal responsibilities.

Separately, the Office of the Inspector General (Procuraduría General de la Nación) has filed disciplinary charges against Ariel Palacios Calderón, the former governor of Chocó, and eight cabinet members. The charges stem from alleged omissions in managing resources for indigenous education in 2023. Officials reportedly failed to report increases in indigenous student enrollment to the Ministry of Education, preventing the department from receiving over $30 billion pesos in additional funding. This deficit reportedly led to public order disturbances within affected communities.
