Colombian government defends presence of armed security at presidential meeting
The Colombian government has addressed allegations of intimidation made by Yahir Acuña, the mayor of Sincelejo, following a meeting with President Abelardo de la Espriella in Coveñas, Sucre. Acuña claimed he felt threatened by the presence of armed men in civilian clothing positioned behind him during the encounter, stating he felt compelled to raise his hands.
Carlos Ríos, director of the Department of the Presidency (Dapre), clarified that the individuals in question were part of the President’s official security detail. Ríos stated that their presence and positioning strictly followed established protocols to ensure the safety of the Head of State and attendees, denying any intent to intimidate or pressure the participants.
The meeting was marked by significant tension, as the President questioned the mayor regarding his judicial and administrative history, specifically citing allegations of corruption and illicit enrichment. The President also indicated that the national government would seek mechanisms to manage resources intended for Sincelejo directly, rather than through the local mayoralty.
