Colombian households spend up to $8 million on World Cup, boosting local economy
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted across the United States, Mexico and Canada, is prompting Colombian families to increase spending dramatically. Estimated outlays range from about 60,000 Colombian pesos per match for casual viewers to over 8 million pesos for fans who travel abroad. Even without travel, households may spend between 1.2 million and 5 million pesos on televisions, streaming subscriptions, food, drinks, collectible albums and apparel. The surge is reflected in consumer‑electronics sales, which rose 22 % year‑on‑year during the September 2025 qualifiers and 36.6 % by March 2026. Economic forecasts suggest Bogotá could gain roughly 1.6 trillion pesos in GDP during the second and third quarters of 2026, while Medellín’s local economy may mobilise around 567 billion pesos as households average 429,339 pesos in tournament‑related purchases. Sectors such as technology, food and beverage, entertainment and sports apparel are expected to benefit most from this spending wave.
