Colombian lawmakers face political scrutiny and introduce new protest vandalism bill

In the Colombian Congress, two distinct legislative and political developments have emerged. Representative Víctor Andrés Armero Hernández of Cauca has faced scrutiny following his vote for Gersel Pérez Altamiranda, a Cambio Radical candidate, for the National Electoral Council (CNE). The vote has raised questions regarding political alliances, as Armero previously campaigned on a platform associated with the Alianza Verde and MIRA coalition.

Separately, Representatives Julio César Triana and Jaime Ignacio Arizabaleta Fajardo have introduced a bill aimed at penalizing individuals who use hoods to conceal their identities while committing acts of vandalism during protests. The proposed legislation seeks to impose prison sentences ranging from 54 to 96 months and significant fines. Penalties could increase to 160 months if explosives are used or if attacks target public infrastructure, such as schools and hospitals. The proponents state the bill is intended to protect the right to peaceful protest by targeting only those who use anonymity to commit crimes.
