Guaviare military operation kills FARC dissidents
The Colombian military conducted a major air and ground operation, known as Operation Amón, in the Guaviare department. The strike targeted camps belonging to the Estado Mayor de Bloques y Frente (EMBF), a dissident faction of the former FARC led by Alexander Díaz Mendoza, also known as alias 'Calarcá'.
Using Kfir and Super Tucano aircraft, the Colombian Air Force carried out precision bombings in the early hours of Thursday in the rural area of El Retorno. This was followed by a ground assault by special operations commandos. While initial reports indicated eight deaths, subsequent updates from the government suggested the death toll rose to 11, with two individuals captured.
During the operation, security forces seized 11 rifles, five machine guns, and significant amounts of logistics and supply material. Among the deceased is reportedly Juan Antonio Agudelo Salazar, alias 'Urias Perdomo', a high-ranking member of the EMBF for whom a reward had been offered. President Abelardo de la Espriella, who assumed office three weeks ago, described the mission as a 'conclusive blow' against criminal structures and part of an ongoing offensive to eliminate illegal armed groups in the country.
