Colombian Prosecutor requests delay in Santurbán reserve decision
Adriana Patricia Salcedo Hernández, the Delegate Prosecutor for Environmental, Mining, Energy, and Agrarian Affairs, has requested that the Administrative Tribunal of Santander refrain from issuing a precautionary measure regarding the Santurbán massif. The request seeks to prevent the government from being forced to define the continuity of the temporary reserve zone before March 4, 2027.
The prosecutor argued that the expiration of the temporary reserve does not automatically prove imminent environmental damage. She emphasized that the court should independently evaluate the necessity, proportionality, and technical and legal viability of the protection before imposing a mandatory deadline on the Ministry of Environment.
The dispute follows Resolution 1277, which revoked a previous resolution that had extended the reserve's validity. The mining-energy sector association, Asomineros, has criticized previous administrative decisions regarding the páramo, calling for all future protections to be based on technical and legal evidence rather than political timelines.
