Colombian Red Cross warns of emblem impersonation and scams

The Colombian Red Cross has issued an alert regarding the unauthorized use of its name and emblem on vehicles and by individuals attempting to impersonate its personnel. This warning comes in the wake of a 7.4 magnitude earthquake centered in San José del Palamar, Chocó, which has resulted in over 289 casualties.

The institution is warning the public, authorities, and media about potential scams where unscrupulous individuals may use unauthorized vehicles to transport fake humanitarian aid or pose as volunteers and collaborators. The Red Cross advises citizens to verify the identity of any personnel and to avoid making donations through unofficial channels or to individuals unable to prove their institutional affiliation.

Under Law 875 of 2004, the Red Cross emblem is legally protected and reserved exclusively for personnel, goods, and facilities directly linked to the Colombian Red Cross and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Unauthorized use of the emblem on vehicles, clothing, or documents is subject to legal sanctions and potential criminal prosecution.
