Bucaramanga activates security measures for Colombian presidential runoff

Mayor Cristian Portilla announced that Bucaramanga has activated a special security protocol and imposed a dry‑law ban on alcohol sales ahead of the second‑round presidential election. The measure follows videos suggesting organized protests that could threaten public order. The city will deploy 1,000 police officers and 103 UNDMO teams to ensure safety during voting.

At the national level, the Colombian Defense Minister warned that Bogotá, Cali, Medellín, Barranquilla and Bucaramanga are under “special attention” for possible demonstrations on election day. The U.S. Embassy also alerted its citizens to potential disruptions. Authorities are monitoring reports of intimidation and labor pressure linked to the vote, with dozens of complaints recorded across the country.
