Colombia Supreme Court orders trial for six lawmakers in UNGRD bribery case

The Colombian Supreme Court of Justice has ordered the formal trial of six members of the Interparliamentary Public Credit Commission for alleged improper bribery. The investigation, led by Magistrate Paula Andrea Ramírez, suggests a scheme where lawmakers allegedly accepted remunerative promises from officials within the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit in exchange for voting in favor of international loans for the nation.

In return for these votes, the investigation alleges that specific public works contracts managed by the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) were awarded. Key contracts identified include projects in Cotorra, Córdoba, valued at over 46 billion pesos, and in Saravena, Arauca, valued at approximately 35 billion pesos.

The six lawmakers facing trial are Juan Pablo Gallo, Juan Diego Muñoz, Liliana Bitar, Wadith Manzur, Julián Peinado, and Karen Manrique. Additionally, the court has called for testimonies from several high-profile figures, including former President of the Republic Administrative Department director Carlos Ramón González, who is currently a fugitive from justice.
