Colombian volunteers join Ukrainian forces, driven by higher pay and solidarity
Thousands of Colombians have enlisted in the Ukrainian armed forces, many coming from prior service as soldiers or police in Colombia. They cite significantly higher pay than they could earn at home, while others emphasize solidarity with Ukraine or a personal desire to serve again as combatants.
War reporter Jan Jessen interviewed four Colombian fighters stationed near Dnipro. The men travelled roughly 10,000 km to the front, describe the modern drone‑war environment, injuries sustained and that the reality on the battlefield has proved harsher than they expected.
A representative of Ukraine’s 31st Mechanized Brigade said the Colombian volunteers have become important members of the unit and that nationality matters less than capability. The report also notes that Russian forces are likewise recruiting fighters from Colombia.
