Colombian Volunteers Join Ukraine’s Front Lines
Thousands of Colombians have enlisted in the Ukrainian armed forces, many after careers as soldiers or police officers. They cite significantly higher pay than possible at home and a sense of solidarity with Ukraine as primary motivations. The fighters are integrated into the 31st Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Army, operating near Dnipro, and are described by a brigade representative as an important component of the unit. Their presence makes the Colombian contingent one of the largest groups of foreign volunteers in the conflict, with language barriers largely overcome on the battlefield. Russian forces are also attempting to recruit Colombians, highlighting the transnational dimension of the war.
The report, produced by FUNKE Media’s Jan Jessen, includes interviews with four Colombian soldiers (call signs Sombras, Logotor, Coco, Dominic) and a Ukrainian battalion representative, offering insight into modern drone warfare, injuries, and the harsh conditions faced on the front.
