Colombian woman detained in Medellín for alleged extortion in Sweden

Katerin Herrera Álvarez has been detained in Medellín, Colombia, following an INTERPOL Red Notice issued by Swedish authorities. She is accused of participating in an aggravated extortion ring operating in Östersund, Sweden.

According to police investigations, the criminal organization used fraudulent emails to impersonate Swedish police officers. The messages intimidated victims by claiming they were involved in judicial processes and threatened them with prison sentences, fines, and the loss of child custody. To avoid these consequences, victims were pressured to transfer between 85,000 and 90,000 Swedish kronor, approximately 34 to 36 million Colombian pesos per person.

Herrera Álvarez lived in Sweden for 23 years after arriving as a refugee following her father's death. During her time in Europe, she trained as a nursing supervisor. She returned to Colombia in 2024 to care for her mother and was residing in Guarne, Antioquia, at the time of her capture. She is currently held by the Prosecutor General's Office while Sweden prepares a formal extradition request.
